This week thousands of UVA alumni and their families return for Black Alumni Weekend—including a celebration of the 50th "Golden" Anniversary of historically Black fraternities and sororities at the University of Virginia. Two historically Black Greek-lettered organizations (BGLO), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (ΩΨΦ) and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (ΔΣΘ) were established on Grounds in 1973. Many others, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA), Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (ΑΦΑ), Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (ΦΒΣ), and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (ΚΑΨ) were founded at UVA the following year.

In 1991 Black fraternities and sororities at UVA established the Black Fraternal Council—and in 2005 that organization was re-founded as the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the umbrella organization for the Divine Nine (the name given for the 9 historically Black fraternities and sororities).

To learn more about the rich history of these organizations at UVA or about current happenings, please visit the University’s NPHC page.
