How do I know if this notice applies to my organization?

This notice only applies to Contracted Independent Organizations (CIOs) that host a website on the Student Council Server. CIO websites that begin with the domain of http://www.student.virginia.edu/ are hosted on the Student Council Server. Similarly, this notice applies to a CIO that uploads content to scs.student.virginia.edu.

What led to this decision?

Since the creation of the Student Council Server, more flexible and robust cloud based web solutions have become available at little to not cost. As technologies have evolved, the Student Council Server has become outdated and its’ maintenance has become increasingly complicated. The development of new and free platforms allow users increased functionality with greater ease of use when compared to the Student Council Server. Further, platforms such as Wordpress provide CIOs greater control of access as well as increased content management and administration capabilities.

What is the timeline for the transition?

On July 1, 2012, any visitor who attempts to visit a CIO website hosted on the Student Council Server will be redirected to an information page that will provide general information for student organizations.

CIOs should begin evaluating their organization’s online presence now to determine their specific needs as it relates to a website. As noted below, Wordpress, Drupal and atUVA provide platforms for student organizations to create and manage an organization website.  Further, CIOs may determine that their organization no longer needs a website or that the organization’s online presence is best addressed through a platform such as Facebook.

As part of this process, student organizations that have a website on the Student Council Server are encouraged to access their files to obtain any relevant information that they would like to reuse when creating a new site.  If you are unable to access files on the Student Council Server, please email: scs-admin@virginia.edu.

What resources are available for CIOs during this transition?

Student Council and the staff of the Office of the Dean of Students-Student Activities is available to assist student leaders during this transition.  While we are not positioned to “create” websites for CIOs, we are able to provide information and resources that will assist CIO leaders in the creating a website.

Throughout the remainder of the semester, we will share online resources, deliver workshops, and share best practices for creating and maintaining and online presence. These informational resources will be shared through a variety of outlets including the Student Council website (http://www.uvastudentcouncil.com), atUVA, and the Student Activities website (http://www.virginia.edu/deanofstudents/studentactivites).
