8/12/07 - Tryouts Scheduled

Tryouts for the upcoming Fall 07 and Spring 08 seasons will begin on Sunday, September 9th, tentatively scheduled to start at 9am. Meet at 8:30 AM at Bonnycastle Circle on September 9th- from there we'll drive to the field. Tryouts will continue into the next week with possible dates on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Come around to the Club Baseball booth at the Student Activities Fair to sign up for the mailing list in order to keep updated on tryout scheduling. To get ready for these tryouts we would suggest throwing and fielding/hitting wherever you can- The field we usually play at, Burley field, is pretty busy at night, but it should be relatively empty during the day.  Also, feel free to tell any of your friends about tryouts- we want to build the best team possible.

6/22/07 - New Officers Elected

The officers for the upcoming 07-08 season were elected at one of the most highly attended post season elections club baseball history.  The results are as follows:

President: 4th year second baseman Nick Bonard takes over the presidency after a late season political (and hitting) power surge.  If his fantasy baseball prowess is any indication of his managerial skills, the Cavs should be in good shape.

Vice President:  4th year catcher, Kevin Zdancewicz is re-elected as VP.  As the most widely read sports columnist in the Cavalier Daily, Kevin has promised to deliver unprecedented publicity with a front page article on the club.  If you end up being interviewed by Z-Dangerous, be careful what you say because he can’t take a joke.

Treasurer:  3rd year pitcher, Ryan Crain (Craig) takes over the treasury in his attempt to gain control over next year’s presidency.  He will be under the watchful eye of the officers to assure he doesn’t blow all the funds on Zaxby’s (a fine dining experience) and Sparks. In addition, Mrs. Craig was unanimously elected as official team mom.

Secretary:  4th year third baseman Matt Sherman returns for his third consecutive (and record setting) term as secretary.  Widely regarded as the best secretary in the league, Matt didn’t even have to show up to the end of the year party to be re-elected.

Social Chair:  After successfully orchestrating the first club baseball date function and playing matchmaker as well as shortstop, Keaton Brooks unofficially joins Adam Ventre as co- chair / doubles machine.

5/4/07 - Cavs Finish Spring with a 21-6 Record

Washington and Lee forfeited the last series to the Cavaliers, giving UVA a final record of 21-6.  Unfortunately this was not good enough to make the postseason, as the Cavs lost the season series to JMU and Virginia Tech, who finished first and second in the conference.  However, next year will be the Cavs' year, as UVA will only be graduating 3 seniors - Corey Sedwick, Davy Cook, and Joe Orville - and will be returning 8 of the 9 starters from this year's team.  The Cavs look to step it up next year and make it back to the postseason and the world series once again.

4/27/07 - Cavs Complete the Sweep of VCU

The Cavaliers faced VCU in three weekday games in three separate weeks and came out with 3 victories: 8-7, 10-4, and 4-0.  UVA won the first game 8-7 behind a good pitching performance by Ryan Crain and strong hitting by Alex Kozera, who went 3-4 and accounted for 6 UVA runs with 3 runs and 3 RBI.  In the second game the Cavs jumped out to an early lead with Adam Ventre leading the attack.  Adam finished 4-4 with 2 HR, 2 runs, and 4 RBI.  Joe Orville pitched all 7 innings and picked up the win that game, striking out 6.  In the third game Todd Zivic pitched a gem, as he threw a complete game and only gave up 3 hits while striking out 6.  Keaton Brooks had a clutch hit in the 4th to break the 0-0 tie and Alex Kozera knocked in 2 more in the 5th for insurance.  The Cavaliers will face Washington and Lee next in their last series of the spring.

The Cavaliers lost the series to JMU this past weekend, dropping a double-header on Saturday with scores of 2-3 and 3-5 after winning 12-5 Friday night.  On Friday all the UVA bats were on fire, as Adam Ventre went 4-5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, Kevin Zdancewicz went 3-4 with 2 RBI, Keaton Brooks went 3-4 with 2 R, Corey Sedwick went 2-4, and every Cavalier had at least 1 hit.  Ryan Crain picked up the win in this game, pitching 6 strong innings.  In the second and third games the Cavs got good pitching performances from Joe Orville and Todd Zivic, but were unable to get the bats going in either game, as they were only able to muster 7 hits over the 2 games.  Next weekend UVA looks to get back on the winning track as they have their last home series of the year against VCU.

4/2/07 -Virginia Rolls over Radford and Sweeps the Series

UVA won its first conference series this weekend, sweeping Radford with scores of 6-5, 16-1, and 20-5.  The first game was more of a pitcher's duel, with Kevin Belt getting the win and Joe Orville picking up the save.  Nick Bonard went 4-4 with a clutch RBI in the top of the 7th, and Kevin Keithley, Corey Sedwick, Alex Kozera, and Matt Sherman all added 2 hits apiece.  In the second and third games the Cavalier bats came alive early as they scored 6 runs in the  2nd inning of the second game and 8 runs in the 1st inning of the third game.  Ryan Crain picked up the win in the second game, going all 5 innings and giving up only 1 hit.  In that game Kozera and Kevin Zdancewicz went 3-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI.  In the third game the Cavs showed their home run power with Keaton Brooks hitting 2 home runs (a 3-run shot and a solo HR) and Matt Sherman adding a 3-run homer, and Bonard also went 3-4 with 3 runs, 3 RBI, and a 2B.  Next weekend UVA faces JMU, its conference rival, in Charlottesville.

3/19/07 - Tech Takes Two from the Cavaliers

The Cavaliers dropped a doubleheader to Virginia Tech this past weekend, losing 7-3 and 7-1.  Ryan Crain pitched 6 strong innings in the first game, but the Cavs couldn't get the bats started to support him, as Virginia Tech pitchers struck out 10 Cavalier batters.  UVA was able to start a rally in the bottom of the 7th and score 2 runs, but it was too little too late.  In the second game the Hokies scored 2 in the 3rd and 5 in the 4th to secure the win.  Ryan Charles was the offensive leader for the Cavs, as he went 4-7 with 2 RBI on the day.  Next weekend UVA looks to avenge its 1 fall loss when the Cavaliers face William and Mary.

3/12/07 - Virginia wins 2 of 3 in the season series against NC State

UVA came back from Spring Break to play a DH against NC State, and lost the first game 7-4 and won the second 12-2 in 5 innings.  Kevin Belt had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 in the first game, but then NC State got their bats started and scored 4 in the top of the 7th.  The Cavs came back to tie it in the bottom of the 7th, scoring 3 runs and getting clutch hits from Kevin Zdancewicz and Nick Bonard.  However, the Cavaliers could not hold on and gave up 3 in the top of the 8th, losing the game 7-4.  In the second game the Cavs jumped out to an early lead, scoring 2 in the 1st, 2 in the second, and then 7 in the 3rd.  Key contributions came from Adam Ventre, who went 2-4 with a grand slam and 5 RBI, Alex Kozera, who went 3-4 with 3 RBI, and Nick Bonard, who went 2-3 with 3 runs.  For the day, Alex went 6-8 with 4 RBI and a double, Kevin Z went 5-7 with 3 RBI and 2 runs, and everyone in the lineup had at least 1 hit.  Ryan Crain pitched 5 solid innings, fanned 8, and picked up the win.  UVA looks forward to its first conference games next weekend, as they play their biggest rival, Virginia Tech.

3/01/07 - NCBA Top 20 Poll Released

Virginia grabs one first place vote and are ranked number 12 in the nation in the NCBAs most recent poll. The climb from being unranked is most likely attributed to the Cavaliers recent tournament win. Last weeks opponent, Maryland ranks 15th, while UVA faces NC State (11) this week and Virginia Tech (7) the week after. Click here to view the Poll.
