Angry Yellow Mail

Dear Declaration,

I wish to respond to attacks made against me in the last issue of The Declaration. It was charged that I had "clearly overstepped his (my) bounds" by using my column in The Virginia Advocate to praise Jared Taylor for his book Paved With Good Intentions: The Failure of Race Relations in Contemporary America.

It was alleged that due to Taylor's controversial background, any book bearing his name on race does not deserve to be mentioned, except only to be denounced. That reasoning is similar to the Christian doctrine of the original sin. The author clearly believes that being a racist is the moral equivalent to that sin; that if someone has a "racist" background, his books and other works are automatically suspect and should not be given credibility. This reveals the authoritative self-righteousness many Americans have employed on the race issue. Ironically, this same subject matter was covered in Paved With Good Intentions.

Just as a professor should judge a term paper by the quality of what is written rather than by the student's reputation, readers should judge the book mainly by its scholarship and not by its author's background. Paved with Good Intentions possesses credibility for its research and analysis and has received acclamations from conservatives of all colors ranging from George Mason to economist Walter Williams to David Brudnoy of Human Events. I encourage those interested in learning the truth about America's race problems to check out the book at Clemons Library.

Conservatively yours,
Allan W. Ng
