On My Honor!
Dear Declaration,
I've got some big questions about this honor thing, okay? People keep telling me that I don't know much about the real world, just because I'm only a first-year student. But, I grew up in Alexandria, so I know the score. I chose Mr. Jefferson's University over places like Dartmouth for one reason: the Honor System. Sure, it all looked really good on the video, with actors and slick production, but little did I know that I was entering a den of vice on that fateful day in late August.
See, I spend a lot of time in the computer lab of my dorm writing e-mail to my friends at other schools, and I have become aware of a disturbing phenomenon. Every few days, someone, often the same person, comes into the lab and steals a large amount of paper (anywhere from a couple of reams to a whole box)! I have reported this to the head R.A., I.T.C., and even my dean, but no action has been taken so far. I have been forced to take matters into my own hands, approaching the thieves on numerous occasions, only to be threatened and harrassed.
So, my question is this: is the Honor System a joke, or does it actually have legitimacy? Are we really here to subscribe to a higher code and better ourselves in the eyes of men and the Lord, or are we to be hypocrites? I think it's high time somebody addressed these issues, and realized that not everybody who attends this university has the same respect for Mr. Jefferson's ideals.

Dear Declaration,
I am perhaps not the most qualified person to comment upon student life here at U.Va., as I am only a part-time student and slightly older than average. However, I have noticed through my classes and work, that the students at this school have a serious deficiency in the area of respect. For some reason, this university seems to be populated mostly with upper-middle class brats who have obviously had everything in life handed to them on a silver platter. In the dining halls, in the dorms, in the academic facilities, students act as if staff members are nothing more than underpaid lackeys who exist merely to cater to and clean up after them. I have encountered this lack of regard on numerous occasions in my job at I.T.C. Part of my duties include the periodic transfer of printer paper from one lab to another, depending on daily usage, as well as the removal of waste paper for recycling purposes. More than once I have been accosted and rudely accused by students of stealing paper that THEY paid for. First of all, you students did not pay for these facilities and the use thereof, your parents savings and my taxes did. Secondly, why automatically assume that someone is stealing, simply because he or she does not appear to be a student. Why not show some respect for those who work hard so that you will never have to.
Sincerely,
|
