Introduction

Yes, this is the sort of fencing where you wear a mask and white clothes, and stab at people.

The Virginia Fencing Club is run by students, for students and staff at the University. We teach an introductory level of the three weapons--foil, epee and sabre, and compete nationally in all three as well. People of all levels of experience are invited to attend practice sessions, in which everyone assists in teaching and critiquing. Our two captains (Robert Pfister and Mary Ball) lead practices, which are geared towards getting eligible members tournament-ready.

Although we have introductory practice sessions only at the beginning of each semester, we invite new people to come to practice year-round. New members do not need any previous knowledge of fencing, and do not need to have any equipment other than work-out clothes and a well-fitting pair of running shoes--the Club will lend you the rest.

Dues

We do charge dues per semester or per year, depending on what you decide, but your first four practices are free. After that, dues are $60 per semester, and $110 per year. Once you pay dues, you may borrow equipment from the Club for the rest of the semester or year.

Tournaments

Tournament participation is limited to students (sometimes only undergraduates) and is not required, but is highly encouraged. We usually travel up and down the east coast for tournaments, but sometimes one will take us out west. Payment for tournaments and travel varies, and is sometimes covered by club dues.

Government

The Club is managed by an executive committee of officers, whose roles you can see here. You can download a copy of our Constitution here.
