Introduction

The exhibition will provide a forum for graduate students to publicize their research and will reward students who present superior research. In addition, we are recognizing those students who show excellence in the performing arts. All GSAS students are eligible.
Awards will be given for the top presentations in both paper and poster formats in each of four categories: Arts & Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, Biological & Biomedical Sciences, and Physical Sciences & Mathematics. All abstract submissions will be judged, and the top submissions will be selected for a poster or a paper presentation (please see Exhibition Guidelines for a complete description). Performing arts participants will be chosen by their respective departments. Participants will be notified by March 15, 2006, regarding the status of their submissions. Students presenting a paper will be asked to give a 15 minutes oral presentation, with 3-5 minutes for questions at the conclusion of the talk. Although we encourage all students to submit an abstract for a paper presentation, only the top 24 papers (4-6 in each category listed above) will be accepted for a presentation. Those submitting abstracts for paper presentations, but are not accepted for a presentation, will have the opportunity to present a poster at the Exhibition. Registration information is available on this site, at the “Registration” link. Performing arts presenters should prepare a 15 minute piece.

Format – Posters & Papers

Posters:

Participants will present a poster and a 5-minute talk during an assigned time on their research. The research presented may be any original work done while a graduate student at UVa, whether or not that work is directly related to a Master's thesis or Doctoral dissertation. The student should be the primary researcher in any collaboration presented. Posters will be on display in the Newcomb Hall main ballroom for the full day of the exhibition. Talks will be given to the judging committees at the posters. A tentative schedule for these talks will be posted by one week prior to the event.

Papers:

Participants interested in presenting a paper are to submit an extended abstract 2 pages in length. These abstracts will be judged and those chosen to present will be notified no later than March 15, 2006. Those not chosen will be given the option to present a poster at the Exhibition. Participants will give presentations in allotted 15-minute time slots; a presenter should be sure to allow 3-5 minutes at the end of the presentation for questions from the audience. Technology requests should be made at the time of entry to the organizers, but in order to avoid any technology-related problems, a back-up option should be prepared by the participant. Judges from the participant’s research category will judge the presentation, based on delivery, design, and content.

Awards

Winners and runners-up will be selected from each research category. Each category will have $1200 distributed as the judges see fit among the winners, with a minimum of 2 winners per group; thus, for each research category, there will be $600 distributed to the winners in the poster competition and $600 to winners in the paper competition. Excellence in Arts presenters are competing for a single $300 prize in their category. In addition, winners will be invited to an awards dinner at Boar's Head Inn at the end of the spring semester, First prize winners from previous years' exhibitions may not present research which is the same as or derivative of their winning presentations.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Student Council and by the Office of the Dean for Graduate Academic Programs.
