Minutes from meeting of
April 22, 2002

Call to Order 6:35pm

Visitors

    Women's Center funding request
  • Virginia 2020 series celebrating women in the fine arts
  • series is mostly chosen by graduate students
  • there will be opportunities for grad students to meet with the speakers
  • asking for $1000, have sought funding from multiple sources
  • total budget is approx. $10K, travel budget is high b/c of many west coast participants, trying to cut costs

    Grad Labor Union -- Dustin Kidd from Sociology

  • students voted to unionize and associated with the Communication Workers of America
  • cobbling out actual association agreement
  • have drafted mission statement
  • folks who are not interested are not obliged to join, meet, or pay dues
  • dues would be 1.15% of payroll, those on fellowship would not be required to pay dues, hope to be able to have dues deducted by payroll
  • officers have been elected

    Dustin Kidd - Sociology, Vice Pres
    Eric Foster - Classics, Secretary
    Jill Rappoport - English, Treasurer

  • March minutes approved

Treasurer's Report

  • we don't have solid budget figures b/c Robert is not here and we were not prepared for the funding request due to technical error
  • UCS funding request from last time was recalled
  • voted to fund $1000 to Women's Center

  • no report

  • no report

President's Report

    Faculty Senate Report
  • Senate has been working on grad issues all year
  • three sub committees: 2 on funding issues and 1 on quality of life
  • Todd serving on q of life
  • committees will be asking for more funding
  • person taking over presidency of subcommittee for faculty affairs will continue to press for graduate student issues
  • report of subcommittee will go to BoV, Casteen, etc
  • three goals: get GSC an office, get a temporary social space, get a permanent space in the South Lawn Project
  • we have an office in Garrett Hall
  • Todd will forward full report when he gets it

    Grad Council Office

  • we have an office in Garrett Hall

    Orientation

  • Office of Orientation is interested in doing a more robust orientation
  • they have compiled a book and would like feedback
  • looking for a way to fund it, but not looking like it will be too expensive
  • director of Office has stepped down, so probably not much will happen this fall, but probably next fall

Old Business

    Athletic Dept.
  • Daryn talked w/ Mark Fletcher the director of IntraMural Rec Sports - no reduction in costs/ fees for summer, based #1 on budget system
  • to change ability to buy tickets will take awhile

    Printing

  • charging for printing? not next year, but sometime soon.
  • will probably give a credit and then you will have to pay after the limit

    Insurance

  • Todd has figures, contract has been mailed, the company Chickering, a student health only company
  • Todd will send out full grid of prices, something like $1070 for ind. plan, reimbursement is $914, better plan, about $100 out of pocket
  • Univ. will not increase amount of subsidy
  • expect some growing pains, but in the end it should be much better
  • can do a lot online as well

New Business

    Amendment to Constitution
  • add position of Vice President
  • change title of secretary to something else

    Officers

  • we need volunteers for next year
