Graduate Student Council Minutes

February, 1997

6:01pm Call to order.

President Kristine Lalonde notes that we will make no policy decisions since there is clearly no quorum tonight.

Secretary's Report: The minutes were presented and approved.
Treasurer's Report: We have a balance of approximately $6,010.13 after figuring in both the money we've already allocated to various projects and the money we've received for the spring semester of 1997.
President's Report: Regarding elections: Julie Theoret, from Math, has agreed to take over as President next year; Amanda French, from English, has agreed to act as Secretary; Bill Murad, from Classics, has agreed to act as Treasurer. Students can vote via the Web this semester, which should increase turnout.

Julie Theoret will serve on the Health Committee.

Nothing new to report on the search committee for a new Dean.

We can't make changes in the funding procedure tonight because we don't have a quorum, but the new procedure will require that the person requesting funds fill out and sign a letter or form, and that they must give copies of their receipts to us as well as to the Dean of Arts and Sciences. We may need to get a filing cabinet in which to store the receipts.

UVA 101, the new undergraduate introductory course to the University, is soliciting suggestions.

Ex Officio Reports:We need graduate representatives for the Judiciary Council and the Honor Committee.

The English department has chosen a plenary speaker and will be requesting more money.

The Graduate Housing Focus group is looking into providing better year-round housing for graduate students. We resolve to read their report when it comes out and send a letter of response to make sure they have a realistic understanding of what kind of housing graduate students want and need.

We need graduate representatives for the Judiciary Council and the Honor Committee.

Regarding health insurance for graduate students--we need to poll our departments to find out if anyone has any information about public institutions currently providing health insurance for their graduate students.

The meeting adjourned at 6:53.
