Minutes from meeting of
March 17, 2003

Call to Order 7:13pm (pizza was late)

Visitors

Funding Requests
    Rosemary Millar, Third Annual Black Women's Leadership Conference
  • Will take place April 6, 10-4pm at the Darden School
  • Event purpose: build bridges between black women; encourage black women to express themselves through creativity
  • Requesting $1000 of $4000 budget; already have support from Women's Center and Darden Minority Admissions Office
  • Last year they requested $1000, which we funded in full
  • Council voted to appropriate $1000 to the Conference

    Laura Hartman, Cooperative Housing of UVA (CHUVA)
  • goal: establish a non-profit corporation to provide higher-quality housing for lower rent for six graduate students
  • requesting $624 for IRS nonprofit registration fee, office supplies, and state incorporation fee
  • hoping to have purchased a house before next year
  • Council voted to appropriate $500 to CHUVA

Treasurer's Report

  • No treasurer's report

President's Report

    Underrepresented minority outreach and recruitment committee
  • Maura will be serving on this committee, headed by Dean Harmon
    Research Exhibition
  • No one has volunteered to organize the exhibition
  • It's almost certainly too late to hold one this semester
  • Victoria will explore organizing one for the fall semester
  • Passed a motion to reserve $2000 for research exhibition expenses, with the hope that the dean will appropriate prize money (last year he gave us $4000 in prize money)

Vice President's Report

    Health insurance premium to rise 16%
  • Administration is still committed to funding health insurance for grades in full "until they can't afford it anymore"
  • It is likely they will continue to fund our health insurance in full for the next 2-3 years at least

StudCo Report

    No studco report

Honor Report

    Jad asked for volunteers to serve as honor reps next year
  • Got one volunteer
  • Will send an email asking for a second volunteer

Departmental Concerns

    ITC says it is eliminating dialup access
  • We thought we fought this battle last year
  • Will contact Dustin Kidd, last year's contact person on this issue, for more info
  • Will fight this battle again if necessary
