  • good economic news - market is open to people who are talented so GSAS students still are in demand
  • more opportunities in gov't and education
  • Career options series Dec 5th for biosciences
  • will be soc sci and somebody else in spring
  • Feb 1 - 15 in PhD career fairs
  • Graduate Career Consortium - promoting the value of the PhD

  • UCS not just here for people leaving academic realm; they can help people staying in the academy as well

Honor: Elisabeth Gibson
  • seeking to create liaison with grad students and research assistants
  • our real task is to find out how grad students feel about the honor system and how to improve it
  • please pass it along to depts.
  • setting up focus groups
  • charged with reporting to President Casteen
  • thought about dedicating part of the Honor Committee to grad students
  • how to relieve graduate students from the arduous process of dealing with honor system
  • how can we inculcate values in our students
  • ask your students
  • many UVa grads will cite Honor System as important to their experience here, but not grads
  • intersection btwn honor and grad life
Funding: English conference
Jolie Scheffer
  • Frederick Jameson keynote speaker
  • want conf to be interdisciplinary
  • got funding from eng. dept.
  • trying to get money from dean Osheim
  • travel costs/ lodging are Jameson
  • Jameson to stay for whole conference and meet with students
  • $650 for posters, programs, and hardcopies to other depts.
  • last year $700
Funding: Classics conference
  • 6th Annual Colloquium
  • attracts people from a variety of departments and from around the world
  • last year $650
  • Conference March 1st
  • Requesting $1500 based upon what total came to last year
Funding: German conference
  • Sarah Painitz
  • 9th year of the conference
  • co-sponsored by history dept
  • topic: confinement
  • hoping to attract grad students in variety of fields
  • hoping for students from US Canada and Europe
  • travel grants important b/c it attracts students. makes it easier for students from far away to come request for $1800 from GSC to enable them to continue to make conference as good as in - the past and better.
  • traditionally have received money from other sources as well
  • onference is free
  • UVa students - good amt of German grad students 4-7; also students from history
  • attendance - about 50 people last year, hoping # will be more this year due to history dept participation
  • last year $1500, but didn't work with history dept
  • $500 from Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst
  • $200 from Max Kade
  • German dept funding cut, so dept funding is very limited.

Treasurer's Report

  • Jamyce has left the University, Robert's new contact is Dean Osheim
  • Oracle has not yet forwarded this year's budget
    $13000 from this year
    $12000 from last year
  • think of spending about $20K
  • today's budget request is $5300 would leave us with $8500 + $12K surplus
  • leave aside $2K for research exhibition
  • $1K for party
  • writing center back?
  • GBS request in spring...

Funding debate

  • German $1800 - approved
  • English $1500 - approved w/ more if film happens
  • Classics $1000 - approved, w/ request for detailed budget

Honor Report

  • honor committee is split as to whether the single sanction will last
  • proposals to modify procedure
  • survey found that people witnessed honor offense and reported it 0.8%
  • many cases kicked out before trial 50% convictions
  • I-panel weeds out most w/o evidence
  • people are ducking Bloomfield cases

  • once you finish coursework your activity fee is lowered and then you can no longer attend games for free, or something...
