With the promise of good weather this Sunday, and lots of people coming over as well, I though I'd try to put an explicit emphasis on a fight practice to go along with all the creative activities planned.
So, if you don't have some critical project to work on, and you want to fight, let's plan to armor up starting at 2 pm on Sunday.
For those of you who don't know, Caer Glyniog and Isenfir do a combined 4th Sunday practice and projects and food day at our place. This is the last one of the year, since the holidays interfere with the next two months.
The day kicks off proper at 1 and food is usually around 5, though we've never been short on munchies throughout the afternoon.
Rides from Charlottesville are available!
If this sounds like something you want to do, please contact Corby so we know how to plan our afternoon. If we don't get a bunch of takers, Philip and I may just put up roof sheathing instead.
I'm Armored Combat Marshal for Journey to the Crusades down here in Caer Gelynniog (Fluvanna, near Charlottesville) in two weeks. If you'd like a day of melees and training, please consider coming down. It's a chance for Eric and Charles to authorize, if they get busy.
Authorizations begin at 10:30. Combat to begin immediately after, or no earlier than 11 AM.
For those used to "SCA time" please be advised that I very hard to START ON TIME!
Planned armored combat activities include a warlord tourney with field obstacles, post-bout training and analysis and other scenarios to prepare for Crusades as time and numbers allow.

Everyone had a great time at the dance revel this Wednesday. Nice turnout, good people and lots of dancing.
Friday night Robear and Alicia and Jonathan stayed over so we could get an early start in the morning.
Jonathan and I polished helms after I cooked dinner. In the morning, we all had a plush drive in Robear's monster van to the site. I got a nap on the way.
The day was hot, but tolerable. About 50 armored combatants came out.
Things seemed to really take a long time to get started, and it really looked like the marshals needed to get moving faster once the authorizing fighters assembled. I put a bit of push onto that, but not as much as I should.
This room seems like a good place to put up some recruiting posters.
For sure, we can show some people more fun ways to fight a battle than table top!
My boss is looking for people to work in our lab this summer and on into the future. Here's his ad:
The ITC-ACHS lab is seeking several students to work in our facility this summer as well as possibly next school year.
Our facility provides assistance to research faculty and staff in acquiring and preparing research images for publication. To assist researchers in acquiring their data, there are microscopes, densitometers, flat bed scanners, slide scanners, and VCRs connected to image acquisition software and hardware on both Wintel and Macintosh computers.
Primary tasks include assisting research faculty and staff with acquiring and preparing their images for publication and assisting ACHS staff with general lab and computer maintenance. Likely candidates are mature, responsible individuals that enjoy working with the public and answering questions. A working knowledge of Macintosh or Wintel computers is necessary. A working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is a MUST. We provide training on our equipment and additional software packages.
The lab is open from 9am to 5pm. The work schedule is flexible around classes and other obligations as long as the hours are consistent
each week. At the beginning of each semester, we prepare schedules.
My freebie (thanks Kymber) bike had a rear flat. After a very messy attempt to use a can of Fix-A-Flat on it ("Warning: Do not attempt to use on bicycle tires." said the can.) I took it by Blue Wheel Bikes to get repaired. Quoted cost over the phone: $9.50. Standing there as the owner(?) fixed something else, I asked if there was any way to fix my bike's broken shifter for less than the value of the bike. Since the value of the bike was apparently about $10, the answer was no. Still, planning to get it repaired, I look around at the bikes.
"Do you ever deal in anything used?" I ask innocently.
"We do take trade ins, and it happens I have something now that would fit you."
"Funny you should mention it, because I don't even know what size bike I should be looking for."
See, I thought maybe I needed a 17 or 18 inch frame. Nope. The owner rolled out a 21" frame mountain bike. Biggest I've ever seen. So after a test drive, I'm now the owner of the best bike I've ever had and the only bike that has fit me since I was 13 or so. I actually have to put extend my toe out to touch the ground from the seat. I'm not hunched up between the seat and the handlebar.
