Armored Practice this 4th Sunday

With the promise of good weather this Sunday, and lots of people coming over as well, I though I'd try to put an explicit emphasis on a fight practice to go along with all the creative activities planned.

So, if you don't have some critical project to work on, and you want to fight, let's plan to armor up starting at 2 pm on Sunday.

For those of you who don't know, Caer Glyniog and Isenfir do a combined 4th Sunday practice and projects and food day at our place. This is the last one of the year, since the holidays interfere with the next two months.

The day kicks off proper at 1 and food is usually around 5, though we've never been short on munchies throughout the afternoon.

Rides from Charlottesville are available!

If this sounds like something you want to do, please contact Corby so we know how to plan our afternoon. If we don't get a bunch of takers, Philip and I may just put up roof sheathing instead.

Journey to the Crusades, etc

This weekend was full of fun SCA activities. On Saturday Ben and I went to Journey to the Crusades hosted by Caer Gelynniog. It was a very enjoyable event and also a busy one for me. I authorized in both heavy rapier and epee. Now I can do rapier activities at events. Now to just get a fencing tunic done so I can look more period stylish too. ;)

Also at JTTC I tried my hand at thrown weapons (spears, axes, knives). Turns out that I either have some skill or good beginner's luck because I placed second in the thrown weapons competition. Really, I was just happy to have anything stick in the target.

Some of the UVA students did quite well too. Dan & Karen authorized in rapier, Charles authorized in heavy and he took first in the thrown weapons. Congrats to them and go Isenfir!

Beyond the things we did at JTTC, there was just the enjoyable atmosphere of the place. It was a beautiful site, lots of room, and plenty of shade (though perhaps not enough for some). There was no indoor space but there was electricity so we enjoyed a great feast that evening. No matter how many delicious feasts I go to, I always end up eating too much in the early courses and never having quite enough room by the end. Luckily it was a nice long feast so it mostly had time to settle before dancing. That being said, we started with all the slow dances first.

Journey to the Crusades, 9/22 just down the road

I'm Armored Combat Marshal for Journey to the Crusades down here in Caer Gelynniog (Fluvanna, near Charlottesville) in two weeks. If you'd like a day of melees and training, please consider coming down. It's a chance for Eric and Charles to authorize, if they get busy.

Authorizations begin at 10:30. Combat to begin immediately after, or no earlier than 11 AM.

For those used to "SCA time" please be advised that I very hard to START ON TIME!

Planned armored combat activities include a warlord tourney with field obstacles, post-bout training and analysis and other scenarios to prepare for Crusades as time and numbers allow.

Sewing workshop, pt1

Yesterday we had pretty good turnout for the first of the two sewing workshops. We got a few t-tunics started, a few doublets started, a chemise, and lots of good socialization. Between handcrafters this Wednesday and another sewing workshop next Sunday some of these items are going to be completed or very close. Hopefully when the items get done we'll have some pictures of the spiffy new threads to share.

Dance & Dessert Revel Pics

Everyone had a great time at the dance revel this Wednesday. Nice turnout, good people and lots of dancing.

Fall Activities fair

Hello everyone,

I have just received additional news about the fall activities fair.
They have pushed the starting time from 8 to 9PM.
So again: The Fall activities fair is a once a year event where all the clubs can recruit newcomers. This is a great chance to get new people interested in our group! This year the fair is on the 26th from 9PM to Midnight (midnight has not been confirmed).
I will be there to man the station but any help we can get is greatly appreciated. For people who would like to help, setup begins at 7:30PM.
I already have a number of people who have volunteered to help me out so thanks to all of them. If you think you can make it or if you told me you could and you can't please contact me. Easiest way is via e-mail: altersoul@gmail.com or cjp8m@virginai.edu same dif.

I will send out an e mail about this to the student list.

Thanks for your help!

Charles

Edit: fair is on the 26th and not on the 28th. oops :P

We meet again!

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to Welcome everyone for a new exciting school year!
For anyone who might be new to the SCA or even just this Website, my name is Charles and I am this year's CIO of the Students for Creative Anachronism. I am really excited to get to spend another year with everyone and to do some exciting activities!
I realize I have some huge shoes to fill considering what a great job Kendra did last year. So if anyone has something they think I could do to make things better please tell me and I will be glad to help you on that.

So again Welcome back everyone and please bear with me :)

Assessment Report

Friday night Robear and Alicia and Jonathan stayed over so we could get an early start in the morning.
Jonathan and I polished helms after I cooked dinner. In the morning, we all had a plush drive in Robear's monster van to the site. I got a nap on the way.
The day was hot, but tolerable. About 50 armored combatants came out.
Things seemed to really take a long time to get started, and it really looked like the marshals needed to get moving faster once the authorizing fighters assembled. I put a bit of push onto that, but not as much as I should.
