Don't Just Study the Past-Live It!
The central theme of the SCA is that we are a participatory group. When we want to understand how people fought in medival wars, we put on our armor. When we want insight into the courts of kings and queens, we dance and feast. We show what we have learned to each other and to the public.
The SCA's members are volunteers. No one gets paid for teaching new people-meeting and teaching new people is a big part of the fun!
Above and beyond the crafts and arts we practice, the members of the Society strive to create an atmosphere of nobility and gentility in dealing with each other. We value chivalry and courtesy, and expect each of our members to behave as good and noble folk. Thus our organization is more than a hobby, more than people simply making things the way medieval folk do. Our Society is an ongoing attempt to make just that: a society of nobility that is open to everyone.
Getting Started in the SCA
The on-campus student group has no membership fee. Practices and many other activities are free to attend as well. We don't charge to share our passion for the Middle Ages!
Membership in our parent organization, the SCA Inc. does cost a nominal annual fee but is not required for most activities around campus or around the world.
Some weekend events include tournaments, feasts, dancing and many other activities. Since these usually provide food and also rent sites to hold them, they charge reasonable attendance fees.
The Society for Creative Anachronism is an international organization dedicated to Medieval and Renaissance living history. While some members of the Students for Creative Anachronism are members of the SCA, we are a separate entity and are not governed by their rules. Membershipin the SCA is not required for membership in the student group. We do have frequent contact with the local SCA group, the Shire of Isenfir, and we do attend many SCA events.
