Creating Assets, Savings and Hope (CASH)
CASH stands for Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope. CASH volunteers provide free tax preparation service to benefit low and moderate-income, elderly, and disabled families. CASH is a program sponsored by the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. IRS VITA was established more than 40 years ago and has since become a nationally-renowned program. Many low and moderate-income working families in the Charlottesville community can benefit from CASH by claiming their EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit). EITC is one of the largest anti-poverty tools in the US yet 25% of those eligible for EITC do not claim their refund because they fail to complete their tax forms. The EITC is a payroll tax refund for the low and moderate-income working families and the average family receives $1,700 refund but some families can receive as must as $4,000. Put another way: The refund equals a 36% or $1.92 per hour pay increase! With your help, the average family can receive a refund of $1700!
What will the volunteers do?
In the Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope (CASH) program, prospective volunteers attend training sessions in the fall semester where they learn about tax laws and tax preparation.
