Madison House Leadership Development

Madison House has developed a systematic, multi-tiered approach to leadership and volunteer management. Through a train-the-trainer model, the staff of five teaches leadership skills to 180 student leaders who then recruit, train, place and manage the weekly service of 3000 volunteers. Our student leaders are chosen by their peers through a competitive selections process to lead one of Madison House's 19 programs. Applications and interviews for Head Program Directors and Program Directors take place during the spring semester. Head Program Director Applications are due January 30, 2009, Returning Program Director Self Evaluations are due February 3, 2009 and New Program Director Applications are due February 13, 2009. Applications will be available online.

Head Program Directors

Every program at Madison House has a Head Program Director who provides the overall vision and direction for their program. The Head Program Director coordinates the day to day program operations, oversees program budget, facilitates bi-weekly program advisory meetings with fellow Program Directors, provides supervision and support to program directors, and mediates concerns between volunteers, community partners, and/or Program Directors. Head Program Directors work to ensure that their PDs are responsive to their volunteers, community partner, and Madison House. Head Program Directors are selected by their peers; attend monthly training sessions facilitated by staff and meet bi-weekly with the Associate Director for Programs for training and support. Head Program Directors volunteer an average of 10 hours per week.

Program Directors

A Program Director is directly responsible for overseeing an individual site or task within the larger program. As student leaders, Program Directors are accountable to their volunteers, to their partners in the community, to their fellow PD's, and to the Madison House staff. The number of Program Directors for each individual program is based on number of volunteers in the program as well as needs of the program. The PD/volunteer ratio is one program director for every 10 to 25 volunteers. Program Directors volunteer approximately 3 to 5 hours per week. The number of PDs per program ranges from 3 to 26.
