Training
A volunteer in this program must attend an orientation session and an interview before being matched. He or she must then attend required training sessions before being allowed to participate in the program.
If you are willing to make this commitment, you will be given the chance to change the life of a child directly. You will discover a friendship not only with your little brother or little sister, but with the members of your support group as well. You will become an important member of a team dedicated to helping disadvantaged children develop to their fullest potential.
Responsibilities
What will the volunteer do?
The volunteer serves primarily as a friend and role model to a young child from Charlottesville or Albemarle county. The program demands a great deal of responsibility, independence, and initiative from the student volunteer.
When?
This is a year long commitment (fall & spring semesters). Volunteers are expected to meet every week with his or her Little Sibling for 2 to 3 hours but the day and time can vary. Children in the program are referred by the guidance counselors in the school systems for a number of different reasons. The age range of the children is 5 to 12 years old.
