Abundant Life

What Will the Volunteer Do?

The volunteer will work with the same child each week and help the child with their school assigned homework; then will tutor the child in reading or math, by completing special activities assigned by a tutoring coordinator. There are also opportunities for the volunteers to play with the kids during free time, take them on field trips, and attend other Abundant Life sponsored community picnics and activities (such as the Annual Christmas Banquet) with the children and their families.

When?

One afternoon a week, Monday -Thursday 3:30-5:00pm

Training:

A training session is required.


Computers4Kids

What will the volunteer do?

Interested in Computers? Interested in working with Kids? Well if so, we have the perfect opportunity for you. Computers4kids is a non-profit organization that offers computer training and tutoring for underprivileged middle school and high school students in the Charlottesville Community. You will be set up with one student for an entire year teaching them how to use simple computer techniques such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to produce two major projects. At the end of the year, if the student has fulfilled their hour requirements and has shown mastery of their computer programs they will have the opportunity to receive a free computer! Only basic computer skills are necessary.

When?

Computers4kids operates weekly from 3-8 P.M M-F. Students would have to volunteer at least 1 1/2 -2 hours weekly with their student within these times.


Computers4Kids - Tech Assistants

What will the volunteer do?

Interested in fixing computers? We also have an opportunity for you. Computers4kids receives donated computers and fixes them uploading brand new operating systems to provide to their students at the end of the year.

When?

Computers4kids operates weekly from 3-8 P.M M-F and only two hours are needed every other week or month. You could directly make a difference in a student's life by working on a computer to be presented to them that they could never afford.


"I Have a Dream"

What Will the Volunteer Do?

Provide social, cultural and academic enrichment that a "Dreamer" might not otherwise have. The volunteer would not only provide essential homework help, but also serve as a role model and foster a genuine relationship with a "Dreamer" by way of activities during the after-school program.

When?

Once a week either Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 2:30-3:30pm or 3:30-4:30pm

Training: One brief training session is required.


Science Fair Mentoring Project

What Will the Volunteer Do?

Volunteers and students are matched based on compatibility of area interest and special preferences. Volunteers help the students choose what project to pursue, construct their experimental apparatus, and write their project report.

When?

Volunteers meet with students for at least one hour a week, for about six to fourteen weeks from the beginning of the project to the end. Opportunities are M-F 3:30-4:30.

Training:

A training session is required.


Teens Give

What is Teens Give

Teens Give is a Community Attention and Charlottesville Department of Social Services Program that serves primarily "at-risk" children and teens ages 9 - 18.

What Will the Volunteer Do?

As a Teens Give volunteer, you might find yourself: tutoring, mentoring, supervising community service activities, or supervising recreational activities.

When?

One day per week. Monday-Thursday 1:30-3:30pm; Tuesday and Thursday 4:30-6:30pm

Training:

A 3-hour training session is conducted by the Director of TEENS GIVE and the program director to prepare volunteers to work with at-risk teenagers.


Virginia Discovery Museum

What Will the Volunteer Do?

Play/interact with children in the gallery by using the art room, log cabin, or stage. Sell admission tickets. Help prepare monthly projects in the large gallery room and weekly activities in the science/Magic School Bus room.

When?

two hours per week: Tuesday-Friday, 11:00am-1:00pm; Wednesday and Thursday, 10:00am - noon; Tuesday and Friday 1-3pm; Wednesday and Friday 3-5pm.

Training:

A brief training session is required.
