MEDIATION
Mediation is a process by which a neutral third party assists persons in resolving conflicts collaboratively. Mediation helps disputants to understand each other and feel understood, and it empowers them to produce mutually agreeable and beneficial solutions to their problems. This practice is very appropriate at the University of Virginia, given the long-standing tradition of student self-governance.

EDUCATION
Part of the UMS Mission is to educate the University community about the benefits of mediation and conflict resolution skills. Through Presentations and customized Trainings/Workshops, we hope to achieve this goal!
You can request for UMS to present to your organization or to meet with you individually to provide information about our services by contacting us.
CONFLICT COACHING
University Mediation Services, with the help of local Charlottesville Mediator Bob Garrity, is launching a new service for the UVA community called Conflict Coaching. Many times, when an individual is in a conflict, that person will have difficulty in convincing the other party to come in for mediation. In Conflict Coaching, two mediators are assigned to the person who is willing to mediate, and helps them to find "tips" on how to deal with the conflict, hopefully empowering them to find a peaceful resolution.

ROOMMATE AGREEMENT SERVICE
The University Mediation Services, in collaboration with the new Off Grounds Housing Office and Student Legal Services, is pleased to offer the Roommate Agreement Service.
We understand that living off grounds can be an amazing experience, and that the roommate relationship is very unique. Yet, given the nature of conflict, we also understand that even the best of friends can clash as roommates. This new service was designed with YOU in mind. The best way to deal with conflict is to prepare for it. What better way to settle issues of rent, cleaning, noise, etc. than through an easy process designed to help you and your roommate(s) communicate effectively?
Together, these three offices have compiled a legal document designed to cover every major aspect of roommate life ranging from rent to security deposits to cleaning and even to pets. The purpose of this document is to help future and current roommates establish expectations. After all, when you sign a lease, you not only commit to your landlord, but also you commit to each other.

We strongly encourage you to use the Roommate Agreement service, a process designed to confidentially and effectively guide roommates in discussion. By providing an objective opinion, UMS can help you troubleshoot foreseeable conflict and avoid a stressful year. Additionally, Student Legal Services can review your document to ensure that it is in line with your rights as a tenant. Feel free to contact UMS to schedule an appointment.
