The Constitution of Psi Phi at Virginia
Article I: Name
Psi Phi at Virginia, a Science Fiction and Fantasy Interest Club
Article II: Purpose
To promote the science fiction and fantasy genres as valuable source of artistic expression, and social awareness. To provide a forum for the discussion of science fiction and fantasy films and books. To provide a database of currently running roleplay games that will assist social connections between club members, and the University of Virginia community at large.
Article III: Membership
Membership will consist of students that are committed to the goals of Psi Phi. We shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, affection orientation, religion, age, handicap, or gender.
Article IV: Officers
- Captain (President)
- Responsible for the continued success of Psi Phi. To this end the captain must aid and oversee the duties of the officers. The captain plans the events of the school year and ensures their proper implementation.
- First Officer (Vice-President)
- The First Officer is the chief assistant of the Captain. If for some the Captain is unable to do Captain-ish sort of things, the First Officer must takeover temporarily. It is, however, the responsibility of the Captain to inform the First Officer of this. The First Officer is in charge of maintaining the Psi Phi library. (Make sure we have one, and that it cataloged and kept in good (although perhaps arbitrary) order.) The First Officer is responsible for the Token Dissenting Vote. If a vote on any matter in Psi Phi is in danger of becoming unanimous, the First Officer must supply the Token Dissenting Vote in order to ward off conformity.
- Quartermaster (Treasurer)
- The Quartermaster must keep accurate records of the club's finances. The Quartermaster is also responsible for obtaining commercial support for special events.
- Comm Officer (Webmaster)
- The communications officer is in charge of managing the emailing list and keeping the Psi-Phi website up to date and in good order.
Article V: Elections
Officers will be elected by members attending the designated election meeting. Removal of an officer requires a petition from the body with at least 2/3 of members signatures, proof of negligence on the part of the accused, and a 2/3 vote of members for impeachment from the Board.
Article VI: Meetings
It is suggested that the officers meet at least once a month to plan events for the next month. Meetings of the body will be had at the discretion of the Board before one of the weekly meetings. Officers should be friendly and talk shop at weekly meetings.
Article VII: Finances
Any spending of organization funds must have approval of the officers, and will be submitted to approval by the club body.
Article VIII: Amendments and By-Laws
To add amendments to the constitution and/or by-laws requires a unanimous consensus vote of the Board and members in favor of the additions.
Statement of Non-Affiliation
The University has continued its reign of silly linguistic demands, requiring (as of March 19, 2009) the following addition to this site:
"Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organizations contracts, acts or omissions."
