The Shotokan Karate Club at UVA was founded in 1997, and we train year-round. Members include undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, and faculty of the University. The club practices traditional Japanese Shotokan karate, and fosters strength and confidence in a friendly, controlled environment. Beginners and experienced students participate in regular training, as well as special clinics, tournaments, camps, and social nights.

Organization |
| The
Shotokan Karate Club at UVA is a member of the International
Shotokan Karate Federation. The ISKF is a non-profit martial arts organization led by Master
Teruyuki Okazaki, a former assistant to Master Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern
karate. The organization ensures the same standards of instructors and training
throughout the world, and provides rank testing, camps, tournaments, and special clinics.
The ultimate purpose of karate is not physical prowess or the winning of matches, but the
development of character, strength, and harmony through training.
